13 July 1959 Charly Gaul won Stage17 at the Tour de France

The 197 long stage included only two major ascents: Grand Bois and Romevere.

Two of the most iconic climbers of all time, Charly Gaul and Federico Bahamontes escaped and rode home together. Gaul became the winner of the stage and Bahamontes the leader of the GC.

The Eagle of Toledo remained in yellow till the end of the race and won that year’s Tour de France.
