5 June 1988 – Snowfall on the Gavia (Giro d’Italia)

One of the most iconic pictures from the modern cycling history is that one of the heavy snowfall on the Gavia Pass on the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia in 1988.

The 120 km long tappa between Chiesa Valmalenco and Bormio became, as the journalist of  La Gazzetta stressed out,  “the day the big men cried”.

Erik Breukink (Panasonic) won the stage, Andy Hampsten (7-Eleven) gained the maglia rosa and kept it till the end of the race He was the first American cyclist to wear the iconic pink jersey.
