Stage 8
Mâcon – Saint-Étienne
(200 km)
Saint-Étienne hosted 22  TDF stage finishes since 1950 already. The Central Massif is usually a place for tipically breakaway stages, like today’s one .

7 categorized climbs “only”, but a constant up and down. It’s too hard for the sprinters, but too easy for the GC-riders. And after the 6th stage there are big gaps between the participants already. Thus it’s an ideal day for breakaway riders and KOM-aspirants.

The last climb, the  Côte de la Jaillère (1,9 km à 7,6%) is an ascent with mountain time bonuses.

Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) wears still the KOM-jersey, he is going to collect more points for sure. Also his teammates, Thomas de Gendt and Tiesj Benoot could play important roles.

Greg van Avermaet (CCC) looks very active at this years’s Tour de France, this could be his day.

Other favourites of the stage: Alessandro De Marchi (CCC),  Alberto Bettiol (Team EF), Omar Fraile, Alexey Lutshenko (Astana), Maximilian Schachmann (BORA-hansgrohe), Lilian Calmejane (Total Direct Energie)
