Between 1933 and 1951, the race was held on 29 April. Fiorenzo Magni won it twice (1951 and 1956) The last two editions of the race (2013 and 2014) were called “Roma Maxima”, the last winner was Alejandro Valverde (Lead picture: Fiorenzo Magni at the Giro d’Italia 1955)
It was his 2nd victory at Liege-Bastogne-Liege of a total of four times (2006, 2008, 2015, 2017).
He finished first ahead of Alejandro Valverde and Danilo di Luca. Rebellin won La Fleche Wallonne three times: 2004, 2007, 2009
It was Fabian Cancellara’s third victory. He defeated two Etixx-QuickStep riders on the narrow streets of Siena.
Although Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) had to withdraw from racing at the last minute, we can find plenty of big names in the peloton of the first European stage race of the season. Some of them riding with their new teams at the very first time.
Here it is! The Tour de France! The most important race of the year. And despite of some big missing names, there will be a plenty of excellent riders in the peloton.
