Topic of the week: Milano-Sanremo
Milano-Sanremo is the first Monument of the road cycling season1, organized for the very first time in 1907, ususally held around the day of Saint Joseph (19 March).
Considering the eoconomical-historical background of late 19th-early 20th century Italy, it is little wonder that both of the Italian Monuments (Giro di Lombardia in 1905 and Milano-Sanremo two years later) were established in Lombardy, the most industrialized region of the country.
Furthermore, because La Gazzetta dello Sport was based in Milano, the city wasn't the center of bicycle manufacturing only, but also the media and cultural capital of Italian cycling.
In 2026, Milano-Sanremo (both men's and women's events) will be held on 21 March,
thus the reason why this race is the "topic of the week" on this week.
